Lead-acid Battery Maintenance
Scheduled watering, equalization, cleaning, connection checks and electrolyte testing that preserve flooded lead-acid traction-battery performance.
Definition
Flooded lead-acid traction batteries require continuing maintenance. Water levels, charge balance, clean terminals and sound connections strongly affect usable life. Labour and management effort belong in lifecycle-cost comparisons, since poor execution can shorten service substantially even for otherwise identical batteries.
Watering
Charging electrolyzes water and lowers electrolyte levels. Exposed plates can suffer permanent damage. Use approved distilled or deionized water, not tap water, and follow the manufacturer's level and timing procedure, normally checking after charge to avoid overflow. Automatic watering can reduce labour and mistakes.
Equalization
Manufacturer-prescribed equalization helps reduce differences in charge and electrolyte condition between cells. It adds heat and water loss, requiring ventilation and level checks. Too much equalization can accelerate corrosion, so do not replace the specified schedule with guesswork.
Preventing Sulfation
Leaving batteries undercharged, delaying recharge after discharge or repeatedly interrupting complete charges can allow hard sulfate deposits to reduce capacity and raise resistance. Recharge as specified, complete required cycles and maintain stored batteries. Opportunity charging needs explicit support from the battery manufacturer.
Safety
Hydrogen requires adequate ventilation and ignition control. Do not create connector arcs during charging. Acid handling needs suitable eye, hand and body protection and emergency facilities. Use approved lifting equipment and insulated tools, and remove conductive jewellery to reduce crush, short-circuit and splash hazards.
Maintenance Management
Schedule and record watering, equalization and electrolyte checks. Give each pack an identity with commissioning, maintenance and capacity-test history. Periodic objective testing reveals abnormal decline. Automated watering and managed charging can reduce reliance on memory under production pressure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add tap water?
No. Use the water quality specified by the manufacturer, typically distilled or deionized, and fill only to the prescribed level using the approved procedure.
Why not repeatedly charge briefly like lithium?
Unsupported partial charging can leave sulfate incompletely converted. Follow full-charge and equalization requirements, or obtain confirmation that a specific opportunity-charge regime is supported.
