Battery and Powertrain

Battery Charger

Equipment that converts mains AC to controlled DC and follows the charging profile required by the battery.

Definition

A battery charger controls voltage and current according to chemistry, capacity and manufacturer requirements. It is more than a simple power supply: a mismatched profile can undercharge, overheat or damage a pack. Lithium systems commonly coordinate with the BMS to adapt current to live cell and temperature limits.

Charging Profiles

Typical profiles use a constant-current stage followed by constant voltage and declining current. Lead-acid may require additional manufacturer-defined finishing or equalization stages. Excess current or voltage causes heat or damage; insufficient output extends downtime. Select the correct profile for the actual battery.

BMS Coordination

The BMS reports allowable charge current and requests reduction or stopping as cells and temperature approach limits. Cold conditions may require heating first. Protocol mismatch or lost communication can cause refusal to charge or conservative fallback, so a failed start does not automatically mean a failed battery.

Efficiency and Cooling

Conversion losses raise energy costs and temperature. Oversized chargers operated far from their efficient range may be uneconomical. Dust, blocked air paths, high ambient temperature and failed fans can cause derating or interruption. Maintain ventilation and cooling surfaces.

Selection and Installation

Match chemistry, voltage, capacity, permitted rate and communications, then size output for available charge windows. Overnight charging may need less power than short breaks. Calculate simultaneous site demand and arrange accessible positions with safe cable routing and appropriate lead-acid ventilation.

Fault Investigation

Check supply, protective devices and connections first, then charger indicators, worn or oxidized contacts and BMS communications. Investigate battery limits such as cold temperature or cell voltage afterward. Longer charging may reflect aging or thermal derating; compare charge records rather than guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are chargers interchangeable?

Only when battery specifications, charging profile, interfaces and required communications are compatible. Matching connector shape alone is insufficient.

Where should a failure to charge be investigated first?

Start with supply, charger indications and connector condition, then communication and battery protection states, following the approved service procedure.
