Hydrogen Fuel Cell
An electrochemical generator using hydrogen and oxygen, offering rapid refuelling but requiring a suitable hydrogen supply, storage and dispensing system.
Definition
A hydrogen fuel cell produces electricity and water without combustion. On an industrial truck, a stack supplies sustained energy and a buffer battery handles transient loads and regenerative energy. Refuelling can be brief, useful for intensive duty, but economics depend on fleet scale, local hydrogen price, supply reliability and infrastructure.
System Components
High-pressure storage feeds the stack. Air supply, hydrogen circulation, cooling and water management sustain operation. A buffer battery handles acceleration and lifting peaks because stack response alone may not suit rapidly changing duty. Auxiliary systems add maintenance complexity.
Comparison with Lithium
Lithium uses relatively straightforward grid charging and often fits natural work breaks. Hydrogen can favour very intensive operations with limited charging windows, including selected cold applications, but requires dedicated storage and dispensing, space and appropriate approvals. Compare real supply and operating costs.
Safety
Hydrogen ignites readily and can accumulate in enclosed high points despite dispersing rapidly outdoors. Engineered ventilation, leak detection, ignition control, suitable electrical installations and inspected pressure vessels are important. Staff need hydrogen-specific training and emergency procedures.
Suitability
Assess whether fleet size spreads infrastructure cost, duty genuinely lacks charging breaks, and supply is dependable and affordable. Check site space, approvals, decarbonization goals and local service support. Do not assume rapid refuelling alone establishes a business case.
Maintenance and Operation
Monitor storage integrity and pressure and respond to suspected leakage through the prescribed emergency process. Use specified hydrogen purity and clean intake air to protect the stack. Maintain cooling, water management, cold-start arrangements and buffer battery. Trend output to assess degradation and replacement needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main advantage over lithium?
Rapid refuelling can support intensive continuous duty without long charging breaks. The advantage must outweigh hydrogen infrastructure, supply and service costs.
Can hydrogen be used safely indoors?
Only within an appropriately engineered and managed installation addressing leakage, ventilation, ignition sources, pressure systems and emergency response. Conventional-fuel assumptions are insufficient.
