Perception and Safety

Work Area Lighting

Fixed and vehicle lighting that supports observation, accurate handling and reliable camera-based perception.

Definition

Work lighting influences distance judgment, identification, obstacle detection and camera images. Adequate illumination alone is not enough: uniformity, glare, colour rendering and flicker also matter. Deep rack aisles, trailers, building transitions and night yards often contain weak areas precisely where visibility and handling accuracy are important.

Beyond Brightness

Strong light-dark variation increases adaptation demands and hides obstacles. Direct or reflected glare reduces visibility. Colour rendering affects labels and zone markings; flicker can cause discomfort and misleading motion appearance. Evaluate the working view rather than a single average light level.

Typical Weak Areas

Racks and stock shadow lower or deeper locations. Trailers and containers block external light. Building entrances create abrupt changes, while yard lighting leaves shadows. Inspect during actual work periods from the operator's viewpoint, including corners and areas beneath equipment.

Vehicle Lighting

Travel, task and fork-area lamps supplement fixed illumination. Beam distribution should reveal surroundings rather than create a bright isolated patch. Choose protection and vibration resistance for the site, and aim lamps so they do not dazzle opposing operators or pedestrians.

Camera Perception

Backlight and extreme contrast can erase detail, low light adds noise and flicker can stripe images. Survey these conditions before deploying vision systems. Supplement lighting, adjust placement or use suitable wide-dynamic-range equipment; complementary sensing may be needed where light cannot be improved.

Improvement and Verification

Measure at real task points and compare with applicable design requirements. Align fixtures with aisles, add local or transition light, control glare and clean dusty fittings. Re-measure after changes and check periodically as lamps degrade and layouts change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sufficient brightness enough?

No. Uniformity, glare, transition zones, colour rendering and flicker all affect usable visibility.

Does installing camera detection remove lighting concerns?

No. Poor light and contrast can reduce image quality and detection. Include lighting in commissioning and consider suitable complementary sensors.
