Reach Stacker
A mobile heavy container handler using a telescopic boom and top spreader to access containers across multiple stacking rows.
Definition
A reach stacker lifts containers using a luffing telescopic boom and a spreader that locks into top corner castings. Its forward reach can access containers behind the first row. Compared with fixed cranes, it offers mobility and flexible deployment, making it useful at smaller terminals, rail yards and inland depots.
Spreader and Locking
Four twistlocks engage standardized top corner fittings. The spreader adjusts for container length and alignment. Confirm all required lock states before lifting; never override a suspect indication or interlock. Inspect lock movement, sensors and spreader structure.
Capacity versus Reach
Capacity varies strongly with boom extension and angle. Greater reach increases overturning moment, so second- or third-row handling may have much lower capacity than first-row lifting. Use the actual load chart and maintain the load-moment protection system.
Operating Safety
Verify container weight and ground-bearing capacity. Keep people outside the working radius and never beneath a suspended container. Respect wind and weather limits. Travel with the load in the prescribed low position, using smooth speed and steering, with adequate visibility and lighting.
Other Container Equipment
Gantry cranes provide dense, high-throughput handling at greater infrastructure cost. Reach stackers favour mobility and flexible medium-volume work. Empty-container handlers cannot substitute for loaded-container machines. Sites often combine equipment according to loaded, empty and rail tasks.
Maintenance
Hydraulic cleanliness, filters and leak control are important under high pressure and flow. Inspect boom and spreader welds, pins and wear parts. Maintain brakes, steering, tyres and powertrain. Functionally verify load-moment and twistlock protection, rather than relying only on indicator lights.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does it reach a container in the second row?
The telescopic boom reaches over the front row and the top spreader engages the container. Allowable weight decreases with reach and must be checked on the load chart.
Which protections are critical?
Reliable twistlock confirmation and load-moment limitation are central. Keep both intact and verify them according to the service procedure.
