Vehicle Types

Pallet

A load-carrying base with fork-entry openings, whose dimensions and condition influence racking, handling and automation compatibility.

Definition

Pallets consolidate goods for storage and movement. Racks, aisles, fork spacing, vehicle loading and automated recognition all depend on their dimensions and structure. Wood, plastic, metal and paper designs serve different conditions. Standardized specifications and acceptable quality form a foundation for efficient logistics and dependable automation.

Materials

Wood is economical and repairable but can absorb moisture, shed debris and need applicable export treatment. Plastic is washable and dimensionally consistent but costs more and has temperature-dependent strength. Metal suits heavy or special duty at greater weight and cost. Paper suits lightweight one-way use with limited moisture resistance.

Structure and Handling

Two-way and four-way entry determine fork access. Decks, runners and blocks determine compatibility with pallet trucks, conveyors and rack beams. Do not assume a reversible design without confirmation. Rack-supported loads differ from floor or dynamic ratings; verify stiffness and the stated racking capacity.

Why Standardize Dimensions?

Mixed specifications can waste rack space, require repeated fork adjustment, reduce trailer utilization and disrupt automated transfer. Predictable dimensions simplify recognition, insertion, conveying and stacking. Standardize before redesigning a warehouse or introducing automation where feasible.

Quality and Automation

Broken boards, distorted openings, missing blocks and protruding nails can cause failed engagement or dropped goods. Even intact pallets need placement tolerances and pose detection. Overhanging loads or loose wrap also interfere. Combine automation deployment with pallet inspection and rejection processes.

Circulation and Management

Track quantities, external return responsibility and any deposit or rental arrangements. Separate damaged pallets for repair or retirement and provide controlled empty-pallet storage. Pooling can reduce owned stock and return burdens, subject to suitable service coverage and charging terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when pallet sizes are inconsistent?

Rack utilization, fork alignment, transport packing and automation all become less predictable. Standardization removes repeated handling and compatibility problems.

Can any pallet be placed directly on rack beams?

No. Check its supported-rack rating, bottom structure and stiffness. Static floor capacity alone does not establish suitability.
