Order Picker

A warehouse truck that raises the operator with a platform to pick individual items or cases directly from storage locations.

Definition

An order picker supports piece or case picking instead of moving whole pallets. On elevated models, the operator's platform rises with the forks to reach higher locations. Low-, medium- and high-level designs serve different storage patterns. Because people can be elevated, fall protection and the model's operating procedures are central requirements.

Role in Warehouse Operations

Forklifts and stackers move full pallets; order pickers select items. Conventional layouts replenish low-level pick faces from reserve stock above. High-level picking can avoid this replenishment step for many low-volume SKUs, but adds vertical travel and safety demands.

Safety Comes First

Use the required fall-protection equipment and designated anchor as specified for the truck and site. Keep gates closed and interlocks working. Elevated travel is restricted by design. Do not climb guards, overreach or carry unstable goods. Follow the applicable operating requirements throughout elevated work.

Picking Productivity

Travel distance, slotting and route order strongly affect total time. Frequently picked items benefit from accessible positions, particularly comfortable waist-to-shoulder heights. Batch picking shares travel across orders but adds sorting complexity. Accurate WMS locations prevent searches and wasted trips.

Common Problems

Poor height sequencing creates unnecessary lifting and lowering. Inventory errors delay finding goods. Bypassed restraints or gates defeat protection. Frequent lifts consume more energy than travel-only duty, so battery sizing must reflect actual picking cycles.

Selection

Match platform reach to picking heights, SKU range and item quantities. Compare high-level direct picking with low-level picking plus replenishment. Check aisles, turning areas, combined operator and goods weight, ergonomics and complete safety equipment for the intended use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an order picker differ from a stacker?

A stacker lifts full pallets while the operator remains below. An elevated order picker raises the operator to select individual goods.

What is the key safety requirement?

Prevent falls through the specified restraint or fall-protection system, closed guards and functioning interlocks, while respecting reach and elevated-travel limits.
