Data Collection

Acquiring equipment signals with suitable coverage, frequency, accuracy, identities and timing so later analysis can be trusted.

Definition

Data collection converts equipment conditions into stored digital information, including position, speed, operating parameters, behaviour and faults. Sources include native vehicle networks, added sensors and business systems. Missing or inaccurate upstream information affects every downstream conclusion and is difficult to repair afterward, so acquisition design deserves early attention.

Start from the Question

Fleet sizing needs work hours, demand and waiting; battery health needs current, voltage, temperature and cycle history; operating-risk analysis needs motion and load context. Specify fields, accuracy and timing from these purposes. Avoid collecting everything indiscriminately, while considering useful information that cannot be recovered later.

Sampling and Accuracy

Slow status changes can use lower rates; rapid braking or impact needs faster capture. Higher rates add processing, storage and transmission costs. A layered design can report normal state sparsely while preserving high-rate windows around events. Sensor precision must resolve the target phenomenon without unnecessary expense.

Time Synchronization

Clock drift, power resets, time zones and differing time references can break event alignment. Synchronize periodically, record clock status and distinguish acquisition time from later replay. Check consistency before combining trajectories, task releases and site events for causal analysis.

Equipment Identity

Use consistent asset IDs across purchasing, service, cloud and physical labels. Maintain model, configuration, ownership and change history. Update terminal-to-vehicle binding whenever devices or trucks move, since misattributed data can be difficult to detect afterward.

Continuing Quality Control

Monitor completeness, timeliness, plausible values and agreement between sources. Alert on gaps and delays rather than discovering them during analysis. Record changes to sensors, acquisition methods and calculations so a measurement change is not mistaken for a real operational trend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is more data always better?

No. Choose information and sampling that answer useful questions. Unfocused collection can be expensive while still missing critical context.

Why do analyses from different systems disagree?

Time alignment and asset identity are common causes, alongside differing measurement definitions. Verify clocks, identifiers and terminal bindings first.
